Possibly the most famous pixie is actually a fairy. Her name is Tinkerbell and she is the fairy (or pixie) created by JM Barrie in the Peter Pan stories. She is described as a fairy in the book but was described as a Pixie in the Disney feature cartoon of Peter Pan. Since then, Tinkerbell has been known as a Pixie and the term is pretty much interchangeable with fairy.

Tinkerbell is the archetype for the modern day pixie costume or fairy outfit. She is often described as green. In terms of a costume this is a green dress and wings. She can fly and with the help of pixie dust she can make other people fly. Very handy for Peter and Wendy when they need to escape from Captain Hook. She can be pleasant and helpful to people around her or spiteful and wicked if she gets angry. According to the author, she is so small that she can only have one feeling at a time which explains the mood swings (was she bipolar in fact).

Again, the pixie costumes that are available are based on these pixies in terms of the color of the dress and wings.

Pixies have their origins in Celtic, Ancient Britain and even Nordic folklore. They are generally described as small creatures that are green in color. They are also sometimes referred to as fairies or sprites. Most people are aware of fairies in fairy tales. They grant wishes and are generally good eggs for the protagonist of the story. Pixies have similar tendencies but they can also be mischievous. Some Pixies steal children or trick travelers. In fact, Fairies have been naughty in literature too but most people seem to think they are sweetness and light.

Folklore was often believed (and still is by some people) to be true up to the 18th century in western Europe. As pixies were part of South West England folklore, many average folk from this region believed that they really existed. There were sightings of them and testimonies of how a pixie had helped or hindered an individual traveling in the woods. A leprechaun is an Irish type of fairy or pixie that many people are familiar with today through movies, advertising and St. Patrick’s day.
