Lil’ Green Fairy Costume
The Lil’ Green Fairy Costume is based on the little green fairy from the film Moulin Rouge that was made by Baz Luhrmann. The Green Fairy from the film was played by Kylie Minogue. This costume is a pretty good copy of the original costume from the film. It would make a great costume for a Halloween party as it looks good and is quite original.

The costume consists of a green metallic mini-dress with sequined, gold embroidered detail below the bustline. The hemline can be adjusted and has light green, taffeta style edging to represent petals. Similar fabric is used to create petal sleevettes.
There is also a pair of petal looking, green colored wings. The wings attach around the shoulders with an adjustable strap. The costume is completed with a headpiece of gold colored roses and gold sheer arm gauntlets or fingerless gloves. The costume is made for adults and comes in small, medium, large and x-large.
The sequins and the shimmering fabric used for the petal styling of the costume are meant to reflect the true nature of the Green Fairy from the times when the Moulin Rouge was making it’s name. She is meant to be dazzling, ephemeral and slightly wicked. This is a type of pixie costume but could be better thought of as a sprite as she can be ever so spiteful at times.
The Green Fairy was a euphemism for the intoxicating spirit known as Absinthe. This was a popular drink for many of the poor denizens of Paris around this time because it was cheap. But it was also quite nasty as people recounted stories of having frightening hallucinations after too much Absinthe.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was the artist that created much of the posters and artwork that advertised the Moulin Rouge. Some would say that the artwork helped to make the Moulin Rouge a success. He went on to become one of the painters identified with the post-impressionist period of artwork and his paintings are highly prized and priced works today.
Toulouse-Lautrec was no stranger to the Green fairy and many believe that his addiction to alcohol was the catalyst to his early death at just 36.
Absinthe is seen as a trendy drink today but it is still very strong and should only be taken is small measures. In fact you can even get a Green Fairy brand of Absinthe. So if you are planning to go to a party this Halloween go in the Lil’ Green Fairy and have a green fairy cocktail to get the party swinging.

I really liked this movie when it came out. Seemed like a very impressionistic film given the dazzling colors of the dresses in the dancing scenes. I also liked how they added rock and pop music to the film score – it kind of breathed new life into a topic that could be seen as tired and stuffy. Anyhow, the costume looks good and I think it will be a good look for the Halloween party.
